Broad Beans (Vicia faba) are a beloved cool-season legume producing large, meaty seeds in fat, velvety pods. With a rich, earthy flavour, broad beans are a culinary classic — enjoyed fresh in South Indian rice dishes, dried as a protein-rich snack, or made into falafel and dal. They grow best in cooler weather. Known as Bakla (Hindi: बकला), Avarai (Tamil: அவரை), Payar (Malayalam: പയർ), and Pavta (Marathi: पावटा). As a cool-season nitrogen-fixing crop, broad beans also improve soil health for the next season's planting — an ideal winter vegetable for North Indian gardens.
