Cowpeas (Vigna unguiculata), also known as Black-Eyed Peas, are one of the most drought-tolerant and heat-resistant legumes in the world. A staple crop across India, Africa, and the tropics, cowpeas produce long, slender pods filled with nutritious seeds. The young pods can be eaten as a vegetable, and the dried seeds make a protein-rich dal. Known as Lobia (Hindi: लोबिया), Alasanda (Telugu: అలసంద), Karamani (Tamil: கறாமணி), Vanpayar (Malayalam: വൻ‌പയർ), Alasande (Kannada: ಅಲಸಂದೆ), and Chavali (Marathi: चवळी). An excellent, low-maintenance legume for South Indian home gardens.
