Ceylon Spinach (Basella alba), also known as Malabar Spinach or Indian Spinach, is a tropical vine producing thick, glossy, oval leaves with a mild, slightly mucilaginous texture. Unlike true spinach, Ceylon spinach thrives in heat and humidity — it is a year-round leafy green for South Indian gardens where regular spinach bolts quickly. Known as Poi Saag (Hindi: पोई साग), Bachali (Telugu: బచ్చలి), Pasalai Keerai (Tamil: பசளை கீரை), Cheera (Malayalam: ചീര), Basale Soppu (Kannada: ಬಸಳೆ ಸೊಪ್ಪು), and Mayalu (Marathi: मयाळू). Rich in iron, calcium, and Vitamin C — an excellent substitute for spinach in tropical climates.
