Ridge Gourd (Luffa acutangula) is a popular tropical vegetable producing long, ridged, dark green fruits with soft, spongy, mildly-flavoured white flesh. When young, ridge gourd is eaten as a vegetable in curries and dals. When fully mature and dried, the fibrous skeleton becomes the natural loofah sponge used for bathing and cleaning. Known as Turai (Hindi: तोरई), Beerakaya (Telugu: బీరకాయ), Peerkkangai (Tamil: பீர்க்கங்காய்), Peechil (Malayalam: പീച്ചിൽ), Hirekai (Kannada: ಹೀರೆಕಾಯಿ), and Shirali (Marathi: शिराळी). A fast-growing, highly productive vine — dual purpose as food and loofah.
