Clove Beans (Dolichos lablab / Lablab purpureus) are a traditional Indian legume with a distinctive aroma reminiscent of cloves. Also known as Hyacinth Bean, this variety produces attractive pods that are eaten young as a vegetable and dried as a protein-rich pulse. The plant is vigorous and produces prolifically in warm weather. Known as Sem (Hindi: सेम), Chikkudukaya (Telugu: చిక్కుడు), Avarai (Tamil: அவரை), Amarapayar (Malayalam: അമരപ്പയർ), Avare (Kannada: ಅವರೆ), and Ghevda (Marathi: घेवडा). A cherished traditional variety in South Indian home gardens, valued as much for its ornamental purple flowers and pods as for its culinary use.
